Capljina in the spring with the mountians in the background

Čapljina

Capljina is located in Southwest Bosnia Herzegovina very close to the Croatian border. It is a small town of about 5,000 people (25,000 with surrounding villages), many young families live in Capljina, and due to its size, it’s quite a close knit community.  About 95% of the population are ethnically Croat.

Reportedly Capljina has upwards of 250 sunny days a year and this is reflected in the wide range of tasty fresh produce that can be found growing everywhere from kiwis to watermelons.

Novi Most has been working in Capljina since 2007 when we opened a youth centre in the town. Since its beginnings English learning has been one of the main activities offered to the community. This has proved an easy way to connect with young people who want to improve their English skills, either through conversational classes, accredited courses or homework help.

The majority of people who come to English lessons also get involved in other activities offered by Novi Most Capljina. These include weekly hang-out sessions, day trips to some of the many beautiful places nearly, meeting young people from other Novi Most locations, snowboarding and camps.

The team also work closely alongside the local evangelical church, one of only a handful of protestant churches in the Herzegovina region.
